Abstract
Objective: Anterior approaches to the cervical spine for decompression, fusion or instrumentation are performed in many conditions including degenerative, traumatic, tumorous or infectious etiologies. One of the potential complications from the anterior surgical approach is respiratory insufficiency as a result of upper airway obstruction. The objective of this study is to confirm the pattern of the prevertebral soft tissue swelling after surgery on the anterior cervical spine and their clinical significances.
Methods: Twenty two patients undergoing anterior cervical spine surgery were reviewed. We measured the prevertebral soft tissue diameter everyday for a week after the operation by their simple cervical X-ray film.
Results: The prevertebral soft tissue swelling is maximum in post-operative 2 days. The diameter decrease rapidly in a week. Prevertebral soft tissue swelling is most sensitive in the upper cervical portion in every patients regardless of level of surgery.
Conclusion: The patients with undergoing anterior cervical spine surgery should be watched carefully for respiratory insuffi- ciency, especially in post-operative 2 days.
