A message from the new Editor-in-Chief

I am truly honored to have been selected as the new Editor-in-Chief of Neurospine. I am also very proud to be working with an outstanding team on the Editorial Board. First, I would like to express my gratitude to the former Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Ha Yoon from Yonsei University, for his dedication and commitment over the past five years. Under his outstanding leadership, along with our editorial team’s tremendous contributions to the growth and development of the journal, Neurospine has now become one of the world's leading spine journals.

Volume 19(3); Sep 2022

The first issue of Neurospine was published in March 2018 after the Korean Journal of Spine was expanded and reorganized into Neurospine, a joint journal published by academic societies in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Neurospine is primarily focused on basic and clinical investigations of the spine and spinal cord. Its scope includes anatomy, basic science, biomechanics, degenerative disorders, neurophysiology and intraoperative monitoring, epidemiology, genetics/genomics, infections, minimally invasive surgery, oncology, pain, pediatrics, trauma, spinal cord, cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbosacral spine, peripheral nerves, neuroimaging, and functional spine surgery.

As the Editor-in-Chief, I know that authors attach great importance to high-quality, unbiased peer-reviews conducted on time, and speedy publication. Therefore, we have increased the number of associate editors and expanded our pool of qualified reviewers. In addition, we are committed to creating rigorous peer review standards and providing the highest-quality manuscript review, editing, and publication. We also warmly welcome anyone who would like to become part of our energetic and enthusiastic team to achieve this goal.

I am very pleased to take on this very important role, and I would like to thank the President of the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society and the Executive Board for electing me as the new Editor-in-Chief of this fast-evolving journal. Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude to my predecessor, Prof. Ha Yoon from Yonsei University, for his efforts to ensure a smooth transition.

I end this message by inviting everyone to submit their interesting research to Neurospine. All papers that receive a high level of enthusiasm in the peer review process will find a place in Neurospine. Therefore, we are committed to publishing all influential research, including reviews related to the spine and spinal cord.

Thank you.
Inbo Han
Editor in Chief

Dr. Junseok Bae (Seoul, Korea) and colleagues present an article entitled “Comparative Analysis of Transforaminal Endoscopic Thoracic Discectomy and Microscopic Discectomy for Symptomatic Thoracic Disc Herniation.” In this article, the authors conclude that transforaminal endoscopic thoracic discectomy for symptomatic thoracic disc herniation is a feasible and safe procedure that could be used for a wider range of surgical levels, with a shorter operative time and hospital stay and less blood loss.

Dr. Fabian Sommer (New York, USA) and colleagues contribute an article entitled “Augmented Reality to Improve Surgical Workflow in Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion – A Feasibility Study With Case Series.” In this study, the authors discuss the advantages of total navigation with augmented reality to improve the surgical workflow, especially in cases with complex anatomy.

Dr. Ji Yeon Kim (Anyang, Korea) and colleagues present an article entitled “Comparative Analysis With Modified Inclined Technique for Posterior Endoscopic Cervical Foraminotomy in Treating Cervical Osseous Foraminal Stenosis: Radiological and Midterm Clinical Outcomes.” In this article, the authors provide evidence of the clinical and radiologic benefits of modified posterior endoscopic cervical foraminotomy.

Dr. Yuan-huan Ma (Guangzhou, China) and colleagues contribute an article entitled “Multimodal Repair of Spinal Cord Injury With Mesenchymal Stem Cells.” In this review, the authors discuss current research findings about the role of mesenchymal stem cells in improving the complex pathology after spinal cord injury, including a novel finding: the perineum-like differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells

Dr. Ankita Bhagwani (Gujarat, India) and colleagues present an article entitled “Spinal Cord Injury Provoked Neuropathic Pain and Spasticity, and Their GABAergic Connection.” In this article, the authors discuss chronic neuropathic pain and spasticity post-spinal cord injury, with a focus on understanding their pathophysiological mechanisms, especially those related to GABA and glutamate.

Dr. Dongwoo Yu (Daegu, Korea) and colleagues contribute an article entitled “Effects of D-Serine and MK-801 on Neuropathic Pain and Functional Recovery in a Rat Model of Spinal Cord Injury.” In this study, the authors evaluate the effects of D-serine and an NMDA receptor antagonist on neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury and explore the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Dr. Jinchao Xu (Zhejiang, China) and colleagues present an article entitled “Learning Curve and Complications of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy: Cumulative Sum and Risk-Adjusted Cumulative Sum Analysis.” In this article, the authors investigate the learning curve based on operation time and the incidence of complications of unilateral biportal endoscopy in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation and lumbar spinal stenosis, and state that appropriate case selection and standardized training are helpful to shorten the learning curve.

Dr. Wicharn Yingsakmongkol (Bangkok, Thailand) contributes an article entitled “Successful Criteria for Indirect Decompression With Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion.” In this piece, the author presents the factors associated with the need for additional direct decompression after indirect decompression with lateral lumbar interbody fusion.

Dr. Chunli Lu (Beijing, China) presents an article entitled “Phenotypes and Prognostic Factors of Syringomyelia in Single-Center Patients With Chiari I Malformation: Moniliform Type as a Special Configuration.” In this article, the author discusses the factors affecting the prognosis following decompression surgery through the clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, and morphological features of syringomyelia, in order to provide a clinical reference for the treatment of syringomyelia.
