NASS-Neurospine Endoscopic Spine Surgery (ESS) Part II
Topic: Visualized Surgical Process of ESS
Volume 16(1); Mar 2019

Dear Spine Surgeons and Researchers:

Endoscopic spine surgery (ESS) is now an important component of the treatment of spinal diseases. For a diverse range of spinal diseases, successful clinical results have been achieved through technological developments in high-quality endoscopic visualization and surgical equipment, as well as by the accumulation of knowledge on endoscopic anatomy and surgical techniques.

Since 2019, the North American Spine Society (NASS; https://www.spine.org) and Neurospine (https://www.e-neurospine.org) have been actively working together to bolster the further development and availability of ESS as a leading surgical technique for spinal diseases. In March 2019, Neurospine (2019) published a special issue on ESS (2019 March issue) that introduced new technological advancements and rapid progress in surgical indications. In order to provide in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with ESS, NASS and Neurospine decided to host an ESS Symposium and Cadaver Workshop at the annual meeting of the NASS (Chicago, September 25, 2019). This workshop was co-led by Dr. Jeffrey C. Wang and Dr. Hyeun-Sung Kim. We also invited 16 world-leading ESS surgeons in US, Korea, Japan, China, Germany, and Taiwan to foster the availability of ESS for spine surgeons.

However, learning how to perform ESS remains challenging, especially considering that most of the processes involved in ESS are performed under videoscopic visualization. Therefore, the NASS and Neurospine have been asked to publish video journal articles demonstrating complete surgical procedures from the patients’ positioning to the final checkpoint.

For this special issue, we are inviting ESS manuscripts in a video format to be presented in a discussion of the full range of surgical processes involved in ESS.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Visualized Process of Endoscopic cervical, lumbar and thoracic discectomy
  • Visualized Process of Endoscopic cervical, lumbar and thoracic decompression
  • Visualized Process of Uniportal and biportal endoscopic spinal surgery
  • Visualized Process of Endoscopic or endoscopic assisted fusion surgery
  • Visualized Process of Endoscopic assisted spinal surgery

The authors must include the following surgical procedure in their video.

Surgical procedures Patient Position and Skin Marking Video
Anesthesia and Skin Incision
Preoperative Procedures: Discography et al.
Insertion of Endoscope
Surgical Procedure
Final Checking Point
