Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to propose a special issue in NeuroSpine dedicated to “Evolving Paradigms in Lumbar Disc Herniation: From Prediction to Precision Surgery.”

Currently, lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is diagnosed and treated based on the integration of patient history, physical examination, and radiological evidence from MRI. However, due to its diverse clinical presentations, there is still no consensus on the optimal treatment strategy, often leading to variable and suboptimal outcomes.

Recent research has identified several novel factors, including psychosocial and genetic influences, biomarkers, and the microbiome, which play a crucial role in LDH-related clinical outcomes. Moreover, emerging surgical techniques are revolutionizing the standards of surgical treatment, including strategies to prevent recurrence.

This issue will highlight the latest advancements and future directions in the diagnosis and management of LDH, with a particular focus on predicting disc reabsorption, identifying novel biomarkers, and integrating artificial intelligence for surgical decision-making.

Leading experts will discuss the efficacy of various surgical techniques, including discectomy versus sequestrectomy and annulus fibrosus repair, in reducing recurrence rates. Additionally, the evolving roles of endoscopic approaches, including unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE), will be explored.

This special issue stems from the efforts of the AOSpine Knowledge Forum Degenerative initiative, aimed at driving innovation in the field of lumbar disc herniation management.

By gathering cutting-edge research and expert perspectives, this special issue aims to advance knowledge on optimizing patient outcomes through personalized surgical approaches and innovative technologies.

This Special Issue will be published in Neurospine (ISSN 2586-6591, https://www.e-neurospine.org/), and we are currently inviting submissions of original research articles and authoritative review papers for peer review and potential publication.

We look forward to your valuable contributions.
