Dear Spine Surgeons and Researchers,
The current issue, which was published in collaboration with the International Spine Study Group (ISSG), highlights research on cervical spine deformity.
For this ISSG/Neurospine special issue on cervical spine deformity, we prepared review articles covering topics ranging from basic principles to surgical techniques to help surgeons and researchers gain a better understanding of diseases affecting cervical spine alignment.

In this issue, Dr. K. Daniel Riew presents an essay entitled "Henry Bohlman (July 22, 1937–May 27, 2010)," in which he briefly describes the life of Dr. Henry Bohlman as an academic spine surgeon who developed new surgical principles and taught pupils who became leaders in spine surgery throughout the world.
Dr. Sang Hun Lee presents an article "Cervical Sagittal Alignment: Literature Review and Future Directions," wherein he summarizes the present-day concepts of the biomechanical features of cervical alignment and suggests future directions.
Dr. Darryl Lau reviews "Three-Column Osteotomy for the Treatment of Rigid Cervical Deformity" and argues that three-column osteotomy allows for the greatest extent of correction in patients with severe deformities. With careful surgical planning and preoperative optimization, three-column osteotomy is a vital tool to improve the function and quality of life of cervical deformity patients. Dr. Murray Echt contributes an article entitled "Anterior Reconstruction Techniques for Cervical Spine Deformity," in which he emphasizes that anterior reconstruction techniques represent a range of options with the potential for powerful global or focal correction in the sagittal and coronal plane. Dr. Jae Taek Hong presents the article "Evaluation and Surgical Planning for Craniovertebral Junction Deformity". In this article, spine surgeons can come to understand craniovertebral junction deformity from preoperative assessment to postoperative complications.
Dr. Ibrahim Obeid reviews "Cervical Deformity Arising From Upper Thoracic Malalignment." In this review, he describes cervical deformities secondary to the primary deformity that are outside the cervical spine, usually in the adjacent upper thoracic area. The management of these deformities occurs in the upper thoracic area, through pedicle subtraction osteotomy.
Dr. Jian Guan presents an article entitled "Quantitative Reduction of Basilar Invagination With Atlantoaxial Dislocation by a Posterior Approach." He provides evidence that quantitative posterior reduction using an individualized cage with adjustment of the posterior occipitocervical angle is feasible for treating basilar invagination with atlantoaxial dislocation. Dr. Atul Goel’s editorial deals with the key features of basilar invagination, with the title "Basilar Invagination: Instability Is the Cause and Stabilization Is the Treatment".
Dr. Dong-Ho Lee presents an article entitled "Vertebral Body Sliding Osteotomy (VBSO) for Cervical Myelopathy With Rigid Kyphosis." In this technical note with a video supplement, Dr. Lee provides technical tips and describes the benefits of VBSO in cervical deformity correction. Dr. K. Daniel Riew and Dr. Christopher P. Ames provide commentaries on this new surgical technique (VBSO) for cervical deformity correction.
